Once a poor, rural village, Fátima became famous in 1917 when three small children witnessed apparitions of the Virgin Mary; it has since become a major pilgrimage site for Catholics across Europe.
We start the day doing all your religious and souvenir shopping with a quick stop at the commercial center of Fátima. Then we left for the Sanctuary. The Capelinha das Aparições and the Basilica of the Santíssima Trindade are different places of worship within the Sanctuary. Don't miss the Basilica of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, where the children who witnessed the apparition are buried – San Francisco Marto, Santa Jacinta Marto and Sister Lucia.
